‘Smashed’ update

Vicky Dawson from the Wells and Mendip Musuem came back to the Centre to return some of the exhibits our members had made, along with local artist Duncan Cameron, that were used as part of the recent ‘Smashed in the Cellar’ exhibition.

She also presented a video of the exhibition itself and we were delighted to see the pieces our members had made featured.

We clearly have some very talented members. One of them commented that he’d never created anything like it before and he was so proud of it!

Museum to You

What a incredibly interesting session we had with Museum to You today. We studied floor tiles that were hundred’s of years old and had been excavated from the remains of the great hall at The Bishop’s Palace. It was so exciting to be able to handle the artifacts and learn all about the buildings that used to stand in the Palace grounds.

We then made cards using stencils based on the original tiles, which was enormous fun and got into the spirit of things with a good dressing up session!

‘Smashed in the Cellar’

We’ve been privileged to take part in two workshops with the Wells and Mendip Museum as part of their ‘Smashed in the Cellar’ project.

Following the excavations of the Musuem’s gardens in the 1990’s, they discovered lots of smashed ceramics, dating across 500 years and much of which would have been very expensive.

Our workshops involved painting china cups, plates and tiles with individual designs which were then (safely) broken up. Our members could then choose to either rebuild them or make them into something completely new and unique.

We hope to see some our efforts at the ‘Smashed’ exhibition which will be in the Museum from 16th February until 11th April. Do go along, it should be fascinating!
